Overview

Salud, L'Chayyim, Cin Cin, Prost, Cheers! Alcohol has had the unique ability to transcend time, place, culture, and language. Although widely consumed and enjoyed, its production and consumption have historically faced opposition. Alcohol consumption was one of the most contentious issues during much of the nineteenth and twentieth century, with the rise of temperance movements and their heavy influence in North America and parts of the UK. Serious consideration was given to alcohol's place in society. Opinions were divided and arguments in defence of both alcohol consumption and abstinence were put forward. This exhibit examines several of the works included in the Scottish Chapbooks Collection, which depict alcohol as both the protagonist and antagonist in the story of nineteenth century Scotland.
