Abstract

A poem written in 1777 that was “founded on an ancient custom in Dumfries, called Shooting for the Siller Gun,” a tradition based around James VI gift of the gun to the best marksman in the Corporation of Dumfries. The poem itself describes the scene of the year’s competition and its carnival-esque air, including the many attendees, the competitors, and judges, as well as the excitement and pride the games inspired.
