Abstract

Two ballads about lovers who are parted first by class (she is the daughter of a lord, he is a poor farmer’s son), and then by war when the young man goes off to make his fortune by soldiering (one in Spain and one in Germany). The first song ends happily when the young woman runs away from home to find her love in Germany, where they are reunited and then return to Scotland with the father’s blessing.
