Abstract

In this popular ballad, the son of a Jacobite rebel is raised by relatives and falls in love with his young cousin. When her father finds out, he sends the young Grigor to join the army and he is shipped off to fight in America. He is killed at Fort Niagara by Native Americans who also cut off his finger in order to get the gold ring that his lover had given him. He then appears as a bleeding ghost to his lover back in Scotland and informs her of his death, whereupon she wastes away and dies of an illness caused by a broken heart. The story helpfully advises parents to beware separating young lovers in case your own children die.
