Abstract
A collection of ballads and songs on a variety of topics. The first is a standard tale of tragedy of two lovers of unequal classes, with an interesting twist at the end. The daughter of a Lord falls in love with her father’s groom; they marry in secret and are betrayed by the lady’s maid to her father. The father throws the young man into prison and then has his daughter watch as he is executed, which apparently drives her mad – she is thrown into “bedlam” (4). The second song celebrates the victory of General Howe over the French in the Glorious First of June, while the next ballad is the lament over a lover lost at sea off the coast of Iceland. The last is a love song, dwelling particularly on the beauties of nature as a setting for lover, presenting an idyllic portrayal of the countryside and rural life.
