Lovers, I pray, lend an ear to my story,
Take an example by this constant pair;
How love a young woman did blast in her glory—
Beautiful Nancy of Yarmouth, we hear.
She was a merchant s only daugnter,
Heir unto fifteen hundred a year ;
A young man who courted her call'd her his jewel,
The son of a gentleman who lived near.
Many long years the fair maid he admir'd,
When they were infants in love they agreed:
And when at age this young couple arriv'd,
Cupid an arrow between them display'd.
Their tender hearts were linked together—
But when her parents the same they did hear,
They to their charming young beautiful daughter
Acted a part that was hard and severe.
Daughter they said give o'er your proceeding;
If that against our consent you do wed,
For evermore we resolve to disown you,
If you wed with one that is so mean bred.
Her mother said, You have a great fortune,
Besides you are beautiful, charming, and young,
You are a match, dear child, that is fitting
For any lord that is in Christendom.
Then did reply the young beautiful virgin,
Riches and honour I both do defy,
If that I am denied of my dearest lover,
Then farewell world! which is all vanity.

Although I have no more daughters but thee,
Jf that with him you resolve for to marry,
Banish'd for ever from me thou shalt be.
Well, cruel father, but this I desire,
Grant me that Jemmy once more I may see,

For none in the world I admire but he.

For the young man he sent in a passion,
Saying, For ever, sir, now take your leave ;
I have a match more fit for my daughter,
Therefore it is but a folly to grieve.
Honoured father, then said the young lady,
Promis'd we are by the powers above ;
Why of all comforts will you bereave me,
Our love is fix'd never to be remov'd.
Then said her father, A trip to the ocean,
You first shall go in a ship of my own,
And I'll consent you shall have my daughter,
When to Yarmouth again you return.
Honoured sir, then said the two lovers,
Since 'tis your will we are bound to obey,
Our constant hearts can never be parted,
But our eager desires no longer can stay.
Then said kind Nancy, Behold, dearest Jemmy,
Here take this ring, the pledge of our vows,
And with it my heart, keep it safe in your bosom,
Carry it with you wherever you go.
Then in his arms he close did enfold her,
While crystal tears like a fountain did flow ;

Crying, My heart in return I do give you,
And you shall be present wherever I go.
When on the ocean, my dear, I am sailing,
The thoughts of my jewel the compass shall steer
These tedious long days time soon will devour,
And bring me home again safe to my dear.
Therefore be constant, my dear lovely jewel,
For by the Heavens ! if you are untrue,
My troubled ghost shall torment you for ey.qj, Dead or alive I will have none but you.
Her lovely arms round his neck then she twined,
And saying, My dear when you are on the seas.
If the fates unto us should prove cruel,
That we each other no more ever see ;
No man alive shall ever enjoy me—
Soon as the tidings of death reach my ear,
Then like a poor unfortunate lover,
Down to the grave I will go with my dear.
Then with a sorrowful sigh lie departed,
The wind next morning blew a pleasant gale ;
All things being ready, the fam'd Mary Gailey
Then for Barbadoes she straightway set sail.
Jemmy was floating upon the wide ocean,
And her cruel parents were plotting the while,
How that the heart of their beautiful daughter,
With cursed gold should strive tp beguile.
Many a lord of fame, birth, and breeding,
Came to court this young beautiful maid ;
But their rich presents and proffers she slighted,
Constant I'll be to my jewel, she said.

Young Jemmy was comely in every feature,
A Barbadoes Lady whose fortune was great,
So fix'd her eyes that she cried, If I have not
This brave English sailor I die for his sake.
She dressed herself in gallant attire,
With costly diamonds she plaited her hair,
And a hundred slaves well dressed to attend her,
She sent for this young man to come to her.
Come nobis sailor, she cried, can you fancy
A lady whose riches are very great
hundred slaves you shall have to attend you;
And music to charm you in your silent sleep.
.In robes of gold, my dear, I will deck you,
Pearls and rich jewels I'll lay at your feet,
In a chariot of gold you shall ride for your pleasure,
If you can fancy me answer me straight.
Amazed with wonder a while he stood gazing,
Forbear noble lady, at length, he replied,
In flourishing England I've vow'd to a lady,
At my return for to make her my bride.
She is a charming young beautiful creaturp,
She has my heart and I can love no more;
I bear in my eye her sweet lovely feature,
No other creature in earth I'll adore.
Hearing of this, she did rave in distraction,
Crying, Unfortunate niaid thus to love,
One that does basely slight all my glory,
And of my person he will not- approve.
Lords of renown I their favours have slighted,
Now I must dje.for a sailor so bold:

I must not blame him because he is constant,
True love I know is far better than gold.
A costly jewel she instantly gave him,
Then in her trembling hand took a knife,
One fatal stroke before they could save her,
Quickly did put an end to her life.
Great lamentation was made for this lady—
Jemmy on board the ship he did steer ;
And then to England he homeward came sailing
With a longing desire to meet with his dear.
But when her father found he was returning,
A letter he wrote to the boatswain his friend,
Saying a handsome reward 1 will give you,
If you the life of young Jemmy will end.
Void of all grace and for sake of the money,
The cruel boatswain the same did complete,
As they on the deck were lovingly walking,
He suddenly tumbled him into the deep.
In dead of the night when all were asleep,
His troubled ghost to his love did appear,
Crying, Arise you beautiful Nancy,
Perform the vow you made to your dear.
She cried, Who is there under my window ?
Surely it is the voice of my dear :
Lifting her head off her downy pillow,
Straight to the casement she then did repair.
By light of the moon which brightly was shining,
She espied her lover who to her did say,
Your parents are sleeping, before they awaken,
Stir my dear creature and straight come away.

Jemmy, she cried, if my father should hear thee,
We sliall be ruin'd, pray therefore repair,
At the sea-side I will instantly meet you,
With my two maids I will come to thee there.
Her night-gown embroider'd with gold and silver,
Carelessly round her body she throws,
With the two maidens v/ho did attend her,
To meet her true love she instantly goes.
Close in his arms the spirit did enfold her,
Jemmy, she said, you are colder than clay ;
Sure you can never be the man I admire,
Paler than death you appear unto me.
Yes, fair creature, I am your true lover,
Dead or alive you know you are mine :
I come for my vow, my dear, you must follow
My body now to a cold watery tomb.
I for your sake refus'd gold and silver,
Beauty and riches for you I despis'd,
A charming young lady for me did expire,
For, thinking of you, I was deaf to her cries.
Your cruel parents iiave been my undoing,
And I do sleep in a watery tomb,
Now for your promise, my dear, I am sueing,
Dead or alive, love, you are my own.
The trembling lady was sorely affrighted.
Amazed she stood near the brink of the sea,
With eyes lift to heaven she cried, Cruel parents,
Heaven requite you for your cruelty.
Indeed I promis'd, my dearest creature,
Dead or alive I would be his own ;

Now to perform my solemn Y W I am ready,

And to follow him to his watery tomb.
The maids they heai'd the sad lamentation,
But the apparition indeed could not see;
Thinking the lady was fallen into distraction,
They strove to persuade her contented to be.

But still she cried, My dear I am coming,
And in thy bosom I'll sooii fall asleep ;
When she had spoke, this unfortunate lady
Suddenly plung'd herself into the deep.
But when to her father the maids told the,matter,
He wrung his hands, crying, What have I done,?
O h ! dearest child it was thy cruel father
That did provide thee a watery tomb
Two or three days then being expir'd,
These two unfortunate lovers were seen,
In each other's arni^^hey together were floating,
By the side of a ship on the watery main.
The cruel boatswain was stricken with horror,
Straight did confess the sad deed he had done-—
Shewing the letter that came from her father,
Which was the cause of.these true lovers' doom.
On board the ship he was tried for the murder,
A t the yard's arm Was hang'd for the same,
Her father he soon broke his heart for his daughter^
Before the ship into the harbour then came.
The cursed gold has caused destruction,
W h y should the rich covet after gain ?
I hope this story it will be a warning;;
That cruel parents may ne'er do the same.

In the rosy time of the year,
Sweet flowers bloom'd, and the grass was down,
And each shepherd woo'd his dear.

Kiss'd sweet Jenny making hay ;
The lassie blush'd, and frowning cried,

I W A S born in the parish of A b o y n e ,

Aberdeen

Shire, of respectable parents, who sent me very
early to live with an aunt at A b e r d e e n ;

when,

under the years of pupillarity, one playing on
the quay with others of my

companions—being

of a stout robust constitution—I was taken notice
of by two fellows belonging to a vessel in the
harbour, employed, in the trade called kidnapping
; that is stealing young children from their
parents, and selling them as slaves in plantations
abroad.

Being market out by those monsters of

impiety as their prey, I was cajoled on board the
ship by them, where I was no sooner got, than
they conducted me between the decks to some
others they had kidnapped in the same manner.
At that time, I had no sense of the fate that was
destined for me, and spent the time in childish

amusements with my fellow-sufferers in the steerage,
being never suffered to g o upon deck whilst
the vessel lay in the harbour.
In about a month's time the ship set sail for
America.

I cannot forget that, when we arrived

on the coast we were destined for, a hard gale of
wind sprung up from the S. E. and, to the
captain's

great surprise (he not thinking he was near

land, although having been 11 weeks on the
passage),

about twelve o'clock at night, the ship

struck on a sand bank off Cape M a y , near the
Capes of Delaware, and, to the great terror and
affright of the ship's company, in a 'short time
was almost full of water.

T h e boat was then

hoisted out, into which the captain and his fellow
villians, the crew, got with some difficulty,
leaving me and my deluded companions to perish,
as they then naturally concluded inevitable death
to be our fate.

Often, in my

distresses

and

miseries since, have I wished that such had been
the consequence, when in a state of innocence !
But Providence thought proper to reserve me
for future trials of its goodness.

Thus abandoned

anddeserted, without the least prospect of relief,
but threatened every moment with death, did
these villians leave us.

T h e cries, the shrieks

and tears of a parcel of infants, had no effect on,
or caused the least remorse in the breasts of these
merciless wretches.

Scarce can I say to which

to give the preference, whether to such as these,
who have had the opportunity of knowing the
Christian religion ; or to the savages herein after
described, who profane not the gospel, or boast
of humanity ; and if they act in a more brutal and
butcherly manner, yet it is to their enemies, for
the sake of plunder and the rewards offered them
for their principles are alike — the love of sordid
gain being both their motives.

T h e ship being

on a sand bank, which did not give way to let
her deeper, we lay in the same deplorable condition
until morning, when, though we saw the
land of Cape M a y , at about a mile's distance, we
knew not what would be our fate.
T h e wind at length abated, and the captain,
unwilling to lose all her cargo, about ten o'clock,
sent some of his crew in a boat to the ship's side
to bring us on shore, where we lay in a sort of a
camp, made of the sails of the vessel, and such
other things as we could get.

T h e provisions

lasted us until we were taken in by a vessel bound
to Philadelphia, lying on this island, as well as
I can recollect, near three weeks.

V e r y little

of the cargo was saved undamaged, and the vessel
was entirely lost.
When arrived and landed at Philadelphia, the
capital of Pennsylvania, the captain had people
enough who came to buy us.

What became of my

unhappy companions, I never k n e w ; it was my lot
to be sold to one of m y countrymen, whose name
was H u g h Wilson, a North Britain, who had in
his youth undergone the same fate as myself—
having been kidnapped from St. Johnstown, in
Scotland.
Happy was my lot in falling into my countryman's
power, as he was, contrary to many others
of his calling, a humane, worthy, honest man.
Having no children of his own, and commiserating
my unhappy condition, he took great care
of me until I was fit for business, and, about the
12th year of my age, set me about little trifles;
in which state I continued until my 14th year,
when I was more fit for harder work.

During

such my idle state, seeing my fellow-servants
often reading and writing, it incited in me an
inclination to learn, which I intimated to my
master,

telling him I should be very willing to serve

a year longer than the contract by which I was
sold, if he would indulge me in going to s c h o o l ;
this he readily agreed to, saying that winter would
be the

best time.

It being then summer, I

waited with impatience for the other season ; but,
to make some progress in my design, I got a
Primer, and learned as much from my fellowservants as I could.

At

school, where I went

every winter for five years,

I made a tolerable

proficiency, and have ever since been improving

myself at leisure

hours.

With this good master

I continued till I was seventeen years old, when
he died ; and, as a reward for my faithful service,
he left me £ 2 0 0 currency, which was then about
£ 1 5 0 sterling, his best horse, saddle, and all his
wearing apparel.
Being now my own master, having money in
my pocket, and all other necessaries, I employed
myself in j o b b i n g about the country, working for
any one that would employ me, for near seven
years, when, thinking I had money sufficient to
follow some better way of life, I resolved to
settle,

but thought one step necessary thereto was

to be married; for which purpose I applied to
the daughter of a substantial planter, and found
my suit was not unacceptable to her or her father,
so that matters were soon concluded upon, and
we married.

M y father-in-law, in order to

establish us in the world in an easy, if not affluent
manner, made me a deed of gift of a tract of land,
that lay, unhappily for me, as it has since proved,
on the frontiers of the province of Pennsylvania,
near the forks of Delaware, in Berks

County,

containing about 200 acres ; 30 of which were
well cleared, and fit for immediate use, whereon
was a good house and barn.

T h e place pleasing

me well, I settled on it, though it cost me the
major part of my money in buyingstock,household
furniture, and implements for out-door w o r k ;

and happy as I was in a good wife, yet did my
felicity last me not l o n g ; for about the year 1754,
the Indians in the French Interest, who had for
a long time before ravaged and destroyed other
parts of America unmolested, I may very properly
say, began to be very troublesome on the
frontiers of our province, where they generally
appeared in small skulking parties, with yellings,
shoutings, and antic postures, instead of trumpets
and drums, committing great devastations.

The

Pennsylvanians little imagined at first that the
Indians, guilty of such outrages and violence,
were some of those who pretended to be in the
English interest; which, alas! proved to be too
true to many of us ; for, like the French in
Europe, without regard to faith or treaties, they
suddenly break out into furious, rapid outrages,
and devastations, but soon retire precipitately
having no stores nor provisions but what they
meet with in their incursions.

Some indeed

carry a bag with biscuit or Indian corn therein,
but not unless they have a long march to their
destined place of action.

And those French who

were sent to dispossess us in that part of the
world, being indefatigable in their duty, and
continually

contriving and using all manner of ways

and means to win the Indians to their interest,
many of whom had been too negligent, and
sometimes,

I may say, cruelly treated by those who

pretend to be their protectors and friends, found
it no very difficult matter to get over to their
interest many who belonged to those nations in
amity with, us, especially as the rewards they
gave them were so great, they paying for every
scalp of an English person £ 1 5 sterling.
Shocking to human nature were the barbarities
daily committed by the savages, and are not
to be paralleled in ail the volumes of history !
Scarce did a day pass but some unhappy family
or other fell victims to savage cruelty.

Terrible

indeed it proved to me, as well as to many others;
I that was now happy in an easy state of life,
blessed with an affectionate and tender wife, who
was possessed of all amiable qualities, to enable
me to g o through the world with that peace and
serenity of mind which every Christian wishes to
possess, became on a sudden one of the most
unhappy and deplorable of mankind.

Scarce can

I sustain the shock which for ever recoils on me,
at thinking on the last time of seeing that good
woman.

T h e fatal 2d of October, 1754, she

that day went from home to visit some of her
relations. As I staid up later than usual, expecting
her return, none being in the house besides
myself, how great was my surprise, terror, and
affright, when, about 11 o'clock at night, I heard
the dismal war-cry, or war-whoop of the savages,
and to my inexpressible grief, soon found my

house was attacted by them.

I flew to my chamber

window, and perceived them to be twelve in
number.

T h e y making several attempts to get

in, I asked them what they wanted.

T h e y gave

me no answer, but continued beating, and trying
to get the door opened.

Judge, then, the

condition I must be in, knowing the cruelty and
merciless disposition of those savages, should I
fall into their hands.

T o escape which dreadful

misfortune, having my gun loaded in my hand,
I threatened them with death if they should not
desist.

But how vain and fruitless are the efforts

of one man against the united force of so many,
and of such merciless, undaunted, and
bloodthirsty

monsters as I had here to deal with.

One

of them that could speak a little English, threatened
me in return, that, if I did not come out,
they would burn me alive in the house—telling
me farther, that they were no friends to the
English
myself

; but if I would come out and surrender
prisoner, they would not kill me.

M y terror

and distraction at hearing this is not to be
expressed by words, nor easily imagined by any
person unless in the same condition.

Little

could I depend on the promises of such creatures,
and yet, if I did not, inevitable death, by being
burnt alive, must me my lot.

Distracted as I

was, in such deplorable circumstances, I chose to
rely on the uncertainty of their fallacious promises,

rather than meet with certain death, by
rejecting t h e m ; and, accordingly, went out of my
house with my gun in my hand, not knowing
what I did, or that I had it.

Immediately on

my approach, they rushed on me like so many
tigers, and instantly disarmed me.

Having me

thus in their power, the merciless villians bound
me to a tree near the d o o r ; they then went into
the house, and plundered and destroyed every
thing, carrying off what moveables they c o u l d ;
the rest, together with the house, they set fire
to, and consumed before my eyes.

T h e barbarians,

not satisfied with this, set fire to my barn,
Stable, and out-houses, wherein were about 200
bushels of wheat, six cows, four horses, and five
sheep, which were entirely consumed to ashes.
During the conflagration to describe the thoughts,
the fears, and misery that I felt, is utterly
impossible, after this, they untied me, and gave me
a great load to carry on my back, under which I
travelled all that night with them, full of the
most terrible apprehensions, and oppressed with
the greatest anxiety of mind, lest my unhappy
wife should likewise have fallen a prey to those
cruel monsters.

A t day-break, my infernal

ordered me to lay down my load, when, tieing
my hands again round a tree with a small

cord, they then forced the blood out of my
finger-ends. T h e y then kindled a fire near the

tree whereto I was bound, which filled me with
dreadful agonies, concluding I was going to be
made a sacrifice to their barbarity.
T h e fire being thus made, they for some time
danced round me after their manner, with various
odd motions and antic gestures, whooping,
halloeing, and crying in a frightful manner, as
it is their custom.

Having satisfied themselves

in this sort of their mirth, they proceeded in a
more tragical manner, taking the burning coals
and sticks, flaming with fire at the ends, holding
them near my face, head, hands, and feet, with
a deal of monstrous pleasure and satisfaction, and
at she same time threatening to burn me entirely
if I made the least noise or motion of my body.
T h u s tortured, as I was, almost to death,

I

suffered their brutal pleasure without being
allowed to vent my inexpressible anguish otherwise
than by shedding tears; even which, when these
inhuman tormentors observed, with a shocking
pleasure and alacrity, they would take fresh coals
and apply near my eyes, telling me my face was
wet, and that they would dry it for me.

How I

suffered these tortures, I have here faintly
described,

has been matter of wonder to me many

times; but G o d enabled me to wait with more
than common patience for a deliverance I daily
prayed for.
Having at length satisfied their brutal pleasure,

they sat round the fire and roasted their meat of
which they had robbed my dwelling-.

When

they had prepared it, and satisfied their voracious
appetites, they offered some to m e ; though it is
easily imagined I had but little appetite to eat,
after the tortures and miseries I had undergone,
yet was I forced to seem pleased with what they
offered me, lest, by refusing it, they had again
resumed their hellish practices.

What I could

not eat, I contrived to get between the bark and
the tree where I was fixed, they having unbound
my hands until they imagined I had eat all they
gave m e ; but then they again bound me as b e fore, in which deplorable condition was I forced
to continue all that day.

When the sun was set,

they put out the fire, and covered the ashes with
leaves, as is their usual custom, that the white
people might not discover any traces or signs of
their having been there.
Going from thence along by the river, for the
space of six miles, loaded as I was before, we
arrived at a spot near the Apalachian mountains,
where they hid their plunder under logs of wood ,
and Oh, shocking to relate ! from thence did these
hellish monsters proceed to a neighbouring house,
occupied by one Joseph Suider and his unhappy
family, consisting of his wife, five children, and
a young man, his servant.

T h e y soon got

admittance into the unfortunate man's house, where

they immediately, without the least remorse, and
with more than brutal cruelty, scalped the
tender

parents and the unhappy children; nor could

the tears, the shrieks, or cries of these unhappy
victims prevent their horrid massacre; for having
thus scalped them, and plundered the house of
every thing that was moveable, they set fire to
the same, where the poor creatures met their
final doom amidst the flames, the hellish
miscreants

standing at the door, or as near the house

as the flames would permit them, rejoicing and
echoing back, in their diabolical manner, the
piercing cries, heart-rending groans, and paternal
and affectionate soothings, which issued from
this most horrid sacrifice of an innocent family,
not contented with what they had already done,
they still continued their inordinate villiany, in
making a general conflagration of the barn and
stables, together with all the corn, horses, cows,
and every thing on the place.
Thinking the young man belonging to this
unhappy family would be of some service to them
in carrying part of their plunder, they spared his
life, and loaded him and myself with what they
had here got, and again marched to the Blue
Hills, where they stowed their goods as before.
M y fellow-sufferer could not long bear the cruel
treatment which we were both obliged to suffer,
and complaining bitterly to me of being unable

to proceed any farther, I endeavoured to condole
him as much as lay in my power, to bear up
under his afflictions, and wait with patience till, by
the divine assistance, we should be delivered out
of their clutches; but in vain, for he still continued
his moans and tears, which one of the savages
perceiving as we travelled on, instantly came
up to us, and with his tomahawk gave him a
blow on the head, which felled the unhappy youth
to the ground, where they immediately scalped
and left him.

T h e suddenness of this murder

shocked me to that degree, that I was in a manner
like a statue, being quite motionless, expecting
my fate would soon be the same; however,
recovering my distracted thoughts, I dissembled
the uneasiness and anguish which I felt, as well
as I could, from the barbarians; but such was
the terror that I was under, that for some time I
scarce knew the days of the week, or what I did,
so that, at this period, life indeed became a burden
to me, and I regretted being saved from my
first persecutors, the sailors.
T h e horrid tact being completed, they kept on
their course near the mountains, where they lay
sculking four or five days, rejoicing at the plunder
and store they had got.

When

whose name was John Adams, with his wife and
four small children; and, meeting withnoresistance,

eyes. Inhuman and horrid as this was, it did
not satiate them, for when they had murdered
the poor woman, they acted with her in such a
brutal manner, as descency, or the remembrance
of the crime, will not permit me to mention, and
this even before the unhappy husband, who not
being able to avoid the sight, and incapable of
affording her the least relief, entreated them to
put an end to his miserable being ; but they were
as deaf and regardless to the tears, prayers, and
entreaties of this venerable sufferer, as they had
been to those of the others, and proceeded in their
hellish purpose of burning and destroying his
house, barn, cattle, hay, corn, and every thing
the poor man a few hours before was master of.
Having saved what they thought proper from the
flames, they gave the old man, feeble, weak, and
in the miserable condition he then was, as well
as myself, burdens to carry, and loading
themselves

likewise with bread and meat, pursued

their journey on towards

the

Great

Swamp,

where, being arrived, they lay for eight or nine
days, sometimes diverting themselves in exercising
the most atrocious and barbarous cruelties on

their unhappy victim, the old m a n ; sometimes
they would strip him naked, and paint him all
over with various sorts of colours, which they
extracted, or made from herbs and roots ; at other
times, they would pluck the white hairs from his
venerable beard, and tauntingly tell him, he was
a fool for living so long, and that they would
shew him kindness in putting him out of the
world ; to all which the poor creature could but
vent his sighs, his tears, his moans, and entreaties,
that, to my affrighted imagination, were enough
to penetrate a heart of adamant, and soften the
most obdurate savage.

In vain, alas ! were all

his tears, for daily did they tire themselves with
the various means they tried to torment him—
sometimes tying him to a tree, and whipping
at others, scorching his furrowed cheeks
with red-hot coals, and burning his legs, quite to
the knees; but the good old man, instead of
repining, or wickedly arraigning the divine justice,
like many others in such cases, even in the greatest
agonies, incessantly offered up his prayers to
the Almighty, with the most fervent thanksgivings
for his former mercies, and hoping the flames,
then surrounding and burning his aged limbs,
would soon send him to the blessful mansions of
the just, to be a partaker of the blessings there.
And during such his pious ejaculations, his
infernal plages would come round him, mimicking

his heart-rending groans and piteous wailings
One night after he had thus been tormented,
whilst he and I were sitting together, condoling
each other at the misfortunes and miseries we
daily suffered, twenty scalps and three prisoners
were brought in by another party of Indians.
They

had unhappily fallen in their hands in

Cannojigge, a small town near the river Susquehana
, chiefly inhabited by the

Irish.

These

prisoners gave us some shocking accounts of the
murders and devastations committed in their parts.
T h e various and complicated actions of these
barbarians would entirely fill a large volume ; but
what I have already written, with a few other
instances which I shall select from the information,
will enable the reader to guess at the horrid
treatment the English, and Indians in their
interest, suffered for many years past.

I shall

therefore only mention, in a brief manner, those
that suffered near the same time with

first of their tragedies being on the 25th day of
October, 1754, when John Lewis, with his wife
and three small children, fell sacrifices to their

T h e 30th, the house,

George Folke, met with the like treatment—

then cut in pieces and given to the swine,

which devoured them.

I shall give another

instance of the numberless and unheard of barbarities
they related of the savages, and proceed to
their own tragical end.

traders belonging to the province, having

business that called him some miles up the country,
fell into the hands of these devils, who not
only scalped him, but immediately roasted him
before he was dead ; then, like cannibals for want
of other food, eat his whole body, and of his head
made what they called an Indian pudding.
From these few instances of savage cruelty,
the deplorable situation of the defenceless inhabitants,
and what they hourly suffered in that part
of the globe, must strike the utmost terror to a
human soul, and cause in every breast, the utmost
detestation, nor only against the authors of such
tragic scenes, but against those who, through
perfidy, inattention, or pusillanimous and erroneous
principles, suffered these savages at first,

unrepelled, or even unmolested, to commit such
outrages and incredible depradations and
murders

; for no torments, no barbarities that can be

exercised on the human sacrifices they get into
their power, are left untried or omitted.
T h e three prisoners that were brought with
these additional forces, constantly repining at
their lot, and almost dead with their excessive
hard treatment, contrived at last to make their
; but being far from their own settlements,
and not knowing the country, were soon after
met by some others of the tribes or nations at
war with us, and brought back to their diabolical
masters, who greatly rejoiced at having them
again in their infernal power.

having had none during the time of their elopement,
were no sooner in the clutches of the
barbarians, than two of them were tied to a tree,
and a great fire made round them, where they
remained till they were terribly scorched and burnt,
when one of the villians, with his scalping knife,
ripe open their bellies, took out their entrails,
and burnt them before their eyes, whilst the
others were cutting, piercing, and tearing

flesh from their breasts, hands, arms, and legs,
with red-hot irons, till they were dead.

third unhappy victim was reserved a few hours
longer, to be, if possible, sacrificed in a more

arms were tied close to his

body, and a hole being dug deep enough for him
to stand upright, he was put therein, and earth
rammed and beat in all round his body, up to the
neck, so that his head only appeared above the
g r o u n d ; they then scalped him, and there let
him remain for three or four hours in the greatest
agonies; after which they made a small fire
near his head, causing him to suffer the most
excruciating torments imaginable, whilst the poor
creature could only cry for mercy in killing him
immediately,

A great snow now falling, the barbarians were
a little fearful lest the white people should, by
their traces,

unacceptable to some of my readers; but, as the
size of this book will not permit me to be so

observe,

as I might otherwise be, I shall just
that they, in general, wear a white blanket,

which in war-time they paint with various
figures, but particularly the leaves of trees, in order
to deceive their enemies, when in the woods
Their mogganes are made of deer-skins, and the
best sort have them bound round the edges with
little beads and ribbands.

On their legs they

wear pieces of blue cloth for stockings, some like
our soldiers' splatter-dashes.

T h e y reach higher

than their knees, but not lower than their
ancles. T h e y esteem them easy to run in. Breeches
they never wear, but instead thereof two pieces
of linen, one before and another behind.

The

better sort have shirts of the finest linen they can
get, and to these some wear ruffles; but these
they never put on till they have painted them of
various Colours, which they get from the pecone
root and bark of trees, and never pull them on
to wash, but wear them till they fall to pieces.
T h e y are very proud, and take great delight in
wearing trinkets, such as silver plates, round their
wrists and necks, with several strings of wampum,
which is made of cotton, interwoven with
pebbles,

cockleshells, &amp;c. down to their breasts, and

from their ears and noses they have rings or beads
which hand dangling an inch or two.

T h e men

have no beards, to prevent which they use
certain instruments and tricks as soon it begins to
grow.

T h e hair of their heads is managed

differently ; some pluck out and destroy all, except
a lock hanging from the crown of the head, which
they interweave with wampum and feathers of
various colours.

T h e women wear it very long,

twisted down their backs with beads, feathers,
and wampum, and on their heads most of them
wear little coronets of brass or c o p p a r ; round

their middle they wear a blanket instead o f a
petticoat.

T h e females are very chaste and

to their husbands; and if any y o u n g maiden

should happen to have a child before marriage,
she is never esteemed afterwards.

A s for their

food, they g e t it chiefly b y hunting and shooting,
and boil or roast all the meat

Their standing dish consists o f Indian corn soaked,
then bruised and boiled.

T h e i r bread is likewise

made of wild oats, or sun-flower seeds.

Their

gun, tomahawk, scalping-knife, powder and shot,
they carry with them in time o f war.

T h e y in

war decline open e n g a g e m e n t s ; bush fighting or
skulking is their discipline; they are brave when
engaged, having great fortitude in enduring
tortures and are the most implacably vindictive people
upon the e a r t h ; for they revenge the death
of any relation, or any affront, whenever occasion
presents, let the distance of time be never so remote.

of their hand and went to Q u e b e c ; where, I was
put on board a French Packet, bound for

IT is to be observed, that the Scrijjfciiro makes mention of three Judases ; the first is Judas Maccabeus *
the second Judas the son of Jo^fcph, the reputed
father of our Lord; and third, Judas Iscariot, thb
son of a Tanner, living in depute M Joppa, or Japho,
a beautiful sea-port on the west of Oanaail, about

Boulogne, and others, repaired and adorned it;
but in these unhappy times, what was one year a
beautiful city, was oft in the next a heap of ruins.
At present, and for ages past, it hath but a bad
harbour, and is remarkable for nothing biit ruinous
remains of antiquity. This1' Judas who betrayed
our Lord, was his mother's first child, who dream
ed that the child in her womb would prove both a
thief and a murderer, and bring her and her generation to shame and disgrace : which so terrified her,
that she was like to go distracted ; but her husband
strove) to pacify her, bidding "her leave it to God the

wise disposer of all things, who may take it away in
its infancy or endue it with more grace than ever
to be guilty of such dishonourable actions.— This
somewhat quieted her, and she was soon after delivered of a lovely male child; but under his left
breast was the following curious marks viz. a cross,
a gallows, twp daggers, and several pieces of money :
this likewise terrified his mother, who concealed it
from her husband, determining, as soon as she was
able, to go to a magician and know the signification
of these surprising marks. The child being circumcised, and she purified, according to the old Jewish
custom, she dressed herself in disguise, put a veil on
her face, and taking with her a kinswoman, went to
the magician's, and being introduced to him, she related her dream, her fears and the marks ifpon her
son, desiring the interpretation of the dream, and
the signification of the marks.
The magician replied, I am no interpreter of
dreams, neither do I justly know the signification of
marks ; and the whole of your story appears as
strange to me, as it can be amazing to you ; but if
you can tell me when the child was born, I will calculate its nativity, and see what it pretends. He
then called for pen, ink, and paper, and sitting down,
calculated his nativity ; and when he had finished it,
he shook his head, and his countenance waxed pale ;
which being perceived by Judass mother, she said
unto him, do not deceive me, but tell me true, hide
nothing from me, whether it be good or evil.—Then,
said the magician, to your sorrow, I have seen the
rules of the planet that reigned predominant at your
son's birth, that he would prove a thief and a murderer, and what is worse, he will, for lucre, betray
the Lord of Life ; for which act he will afterwards
despair of mercy, lay violent hands on himself, and

come to a shameful end.—These words pierced the
mother's heart, who wringing her hands, wished she
had never been born, rather than to have been the
mother of such an unhappy child; and asked the
magician what she could do to prevent the bringing
of shame or disgrace on her family ? He told her he
knew no way of prevention, but by laying violent
hands on it, which might be now easily done in its
infancy and in a manner so as not to be discovered.
To this she replied, that she would not for ten thousand worlds commit such an act of violence on her
son ; for if her husband had the least suspicion of it,
he was so fond of Judas, that he would never be reconciled to her any more ; yet for the sake of her
family, she would by some means or other prevent it
without destroying it; and then told the magician,
that if she had a small boat made like a shell, with
a cover to go down close that no water might get in,
and a little vent to let in air at the top, and room in
it to lie soft and easy, she might without danger send
him down the river Jordan, and so commit him
wholly to the protection of providence, which might
conduct him to some distant shore, into the hands
of some tender persons, and thereby preserve his
life ; and if he afterwards commits those base actions
the shame will fall on his own head, as no one will
know from whom he is descended. The magician
highly commended her for her invention, and said
he would procure such a boat for her ; and-she promising him a good reward for his assistance, returned home. After she was gone, the magician
sent for one Rot, a very cunning Artist, a Joiner bv
trade, who undertook to make the boat, drawing
out with his pencil, the form of it, carried it home
with him, wrought upon it in private, and having
soon finished it, brought it to the magician's house,

who paid him largely for it, and sent a semnt to
the house of Simon, who told Judas's mother, that
the matter which his master and she spoke of was
now finished. She understanding him, went next
morning to the magician's house, viewed the boat,
and liked it well, saying it was very convenient for
the end intended, but seemed perplexed how she
should do it privately, and keep it from -discovery,
as death was the consequence thereof. Her kinswoman begged her to leave that -to her, and all
should be safe enough ; for we will feign the child
sick for a day or two, in the meantime we will make
some inquiry in the city for the dead body of some
poor male child which we will buy of its parents,
and have it privately brought to our house to be
buried ; in the meantime we wffl dispatch your son
to sea, and make him believe the other child to be
his, and that he died during his absence ; so having
it buried, the matter can never be brought to light.
The mother liked the contrivance, and going
home with a promise af a g^eat reward, and her
friendship lor life, she swore her servants to secrecy,
and then said she, we must- act in this manner.
When your master comes home at night, I shall
put on very dejected looks, and when he asks the
cause, I shall tell him that Judas is not well, and
that I am apprehensive of his death, which you
must all testify and confirm. She accordingly put
this scheme into practice at night, when flier husband did all he could to comfort her, telling her that
they were young, they might, be parents of many
children : and going up stairs to see the child, the
maid then pinched its neck till it was black in the
face, and thinking it in convulsions, gjave it over
'o death, As soon -as he was gone out in the
morning, the mother and kinswoman took the child

�and went to the magician's house, in order to put
the child to sea. They put on him many warm
and rich garments, with an upper coat of oil, that
no water might penetrate it; and the magician, on
a piece of parchment, wrote the following words:

which his mother sewed round his neck and pu^
him into the boat, and shutdown the coyer. At
parting with the child the mother was almost distracted, wringing her hands and keeping bitterly,
but being comforted by the magician, and her kinswoman she was at last pacified, and desired to go
home, as she could not bear to see the child put into
the water, so she and her kinswoman departed home.
The magician then took the boat -and carried it
down to his own garden, at thp foot of which ran
the river Jordan, and putting it in where a strong
stream ran, it was soon carried out of sight.
The mother when she got Jiorne fainted away,
but was revived by being informed by her maidservant, that during her absence, they had almost
brought the matter to a close, having found a neighbour's male 6hild, who had died the day before, and
was just of the same.age as Judas, for whose body
they had given the parents a small sum of ;moneyf
and paid the expense of burying a coffin full of
bones, by way of a blind : and the only thing that
remained was to deceive her "husband, and get this
phyd buried under the sanction of Judas's body.
The father coming hon,ie at night, and finding
his wife in tears, soon guessed the dismal pause ;
and inquiring of the servants, they with dissembled
grief informed him, that jthe child died in the
morning soon after his departure.. The man was

much affected with the loss of his child, and thinking to prevent his wife's grief by the sight of the
body he had it removed to a kinsman's house, and
in a day or two interred it from thence, supposing
it to be his son Judas.
By this time Providence had conducted Judas,
alive and well, unto the coast of Iscariot, a kingdom in Palestine, where Pheophilus the king often
used to recreate himself, in beholding the ships
pass and repass at sea. It happened that the very
day that Judas was cast on the coast, the king and
his nobles came on that diversion, and as they were
standing on the top of the rock, looking into the
sea, the king espied a little boat floating upon the
water, and thinking it to be a chest of some wrecked ship, he ordered a servant to put out a boat and
fetch it; which being done, and brought to the
king, he ordered it to be broken open; when to
their great surprise, they found a lovely babe, who
look'd up, and smiled in the king's face. Then
said the king to the child, icelcome as my own child ;
and expressed much joy in being providentially
sent to preserve the babe's life, and taking it up in
his arms, said if thou wert a child begat by me, I
could not esteem or value thee more. Then he
espied about its neck the aforementioned parchment, viz:
MY NAME IS JUDAS.
Well, said the king, as thy name is Judas, I will
now double name thee, and then called him Judas
Iscariot, because he found him near the coast of
that name. He was then brought to court, treated
as the king's own child, and at a proper age educated well, and at last became a man of learning and

genius and behaved himself so wisely, that the king
made him his principal steward.
Judas being arrived at this rank, still coveted
greater, and remembering the queen one day said,
that if the prince, her son died, Judas should be
her heir, he therefore set about contriving to kill
him, accordingly he professed great love and friendship for him; and one day being walking together,
Judas took occasion to quarrel with the prince, and
maliciously slew him, thinking all would go well
with him if he was dead.

Grown warm, strikes forth his baneful sting,
And robb'd him of his rest.
Though none accused him of the murder, yet his
conscience so stung him, that he so#n quitted the
kingdom, leaving all his pomp and finery behind
him, and changing his name, took upon him the
mean employ of a servant, wandering about from
place to place, until at length he arrived at Joppa,
the place of his nativity ; here he soon got a place
in a nobleman's family, where he behaved so well
as to gain the esteem of his lord and lady, and all
that knew him. One day it happened that as his
lady was walking abroad big with child, she longed
for some fruit, which she saw in Judas's father's
garden, bidding him go and buy her some. He
took the money, but was resolved to steal the fruit;
and going to the garden, broke down the fences,
which as he was doing his father came out, and
seized him for the robbery ; and Judas to extricate
himself from the hand of justice murdered his
father upon the spot, and immediately escaped to

and the part she had acted therein. Judas heard
this with wonder and astonishment, ancV on his part
confessed to her the many crimes he had been guilty
o f ; after which she desired him to depart from her,
and seek mercy of God in another country ; protesting she would never be carnally known to him any

Judas full of grief and remorse of conscience, left
Joppa, and wandered about like a pilgrim, till he
heard of a mighty prophet, called Jesus of Nazareth,
in the land of Judea, who wrought many miracles,
and wonderful works; to hint he went, and liking
his doctrine and seeing his miracles, he begged of
our Lord to be admitted one of his followers: Our
Saviour chose him to be one of his- disciples, and
gave him the charge of what money or provision
he carried about with him. There is no evidence
that his rerligious instructions, or his preaching
the word, or miracles, were inferior to those of his
brethren: but covetousness still reigned in his
heart. Notwithstanding all this Judas could not
forget his covetousness, for when Mary Magdalene
brought a box of costly ointment, to anoint our dear
Lord's feet, at the house of Simon the Leper, Judas

Lord beheld his adversaries coming with burning
torches and lanterns, and weapons to apprehend
him; then spake he to his disciples, and said,
a Rise let us go ; behold Tie is at hand that will betray meAnd

the traitor, saying, Hail, Master, and kissed him.
For it is written, that it was the manner and custom
of our Lord Jesus towards his disciples, that when
at any time he had sent them out, at their return
again, he would receive them with a loving kiss.
Then they laid hands on the Lord, and bound him
as a thief and a murderer, and led him away to
the high Priest and Elders, who asked him many
questions ; to which our Lord gave them no answer,
but stood like a lamb dumb before his shearers.
And here let us behold our Lord Jesus, how patiently and meekly he receives that false and treacherous kiss from that unfaithful disciple, whose feet
he had vouchsafed to wash with his own hands,
and whom out of his unspeakable charity he refused
not to feed with the precious food of his blessed
oody. Consider likewise how meekly he suffered
himself to be taken, bound, struck, and furiously
dragged away, as if he had been a thief, or the
most wicked person in the world, void of power to
help himself. Contemplate also the great sorrow
and inward affliction he had of his disciples, who
fled and left him in the hands of those ravenous
wolves. And on the other side, consider the grief of
their hearts, since the cause of their leaving him was
not the perversity of their will, but the frailty of
their weak nature : for which they heartily mourn
and sigh, like poor orphans that know not what they
do, or whither to go ; and their sorrow was so much
the greater, as they knew in what villanous man-

most potent Tiberius, happy and prosperous be his
reign, having heard and known the accusation of
JESUS of NAZARETH, whom the Jews brought bound,
to pronounce his sentence ; seeing he, by presump
tuous expressions, called himself the SON of GOD,
and the KING of the JEWS, and said he would destroy
the TEMPLE of Solomon. Let him be condemned to
the cross with the two Thieves.

MISERABLE AND AWFUL END OF THE TRAITOR JUDAS.
NOW JUDAS, the Traitor, had no sooner seen
his master condemned by the Jewish council, than
his conscience upbraided him ; he brought back the
thirty pieces of silver, and confessed he had betrayed his innocent master. But the Jewish rulers
replied, that that was none of their business, he
might blame himself. And he threw back the
thirty pieces of silver and went out and hanged himself; but the rope breaking, or the tree giving way,
he fell and his body burst asunder, and his bowels
gushed out. Then the Jews, as they thought the
price of blood was not fit for the Treasury, they, as
agents for Judas, gave it for the Potters-field to
bury strangers in.

On the Evening after our Lord's resurrection he
appeared unto ten of the apostles, Judas being dead,
and Thomas absent: he renewed their mission, and
breathed on them, as a token of his sending the
Holy Ghost. After giving them repeated proofs of
his resurrection, he just before his ascension gave
them a formal commission, saying, " Go ye therefore,
and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost;
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have
commanded you: andy lo, I am with you alway, even
unto the end of the world. Amen.11 After they had
witnessed their master's departure to the heavenly
mansions, Peter proposed, that one who had been a
constant witness of his marvellous sufferings and
conduct, should be chosen to fill the room of Judas.
The disciples chose Barsabas and Matthias for the
candidates. As the office was extraordinary, and
perhaps the votes equal, the final determination,
which of the two should be the apostle, was left to
the decision of God by the lot. After prayer, the
lots were cast, and it fell upon Matthias: he was
therefore numbered with the eleven apostles.
On the day of Pentecost, a feast appointed to
commemorate the giving of the law, the Holy Ghost,
in the shape of cloven tongues of fire, descended on
each of them; rendered them bold and infallible
in preaching the gospel; qualified them with power,
to speak in every language, to discern men's tem-

pers, and to confer the miraculous influence of
speaking with tongues on others, by the laying on
of hands.

TOUCHING the wonderful ascension of our Lord
Jesus, it behoves thee, pious reader, to awaken thy
heart, and render thyself with more than ordinarly
attention to all that is here said or done, relating
to this subject, if thou desire to feed thy soul with
heavenly comfort, and reap the spiritual ^notion,
which plentifully flows from the devout contemplation of so divine a subject _ hfaorfa YQffa ffatforfi
On the fortieth day after the resurrectiou, our
Lord Jesus, knowing that his time was new come to
depart from this world, and to pass hence to his
Father, taking with him the holy patrian?hs, prophets, and others, who after his xesiu'iiefttion were
in the terrestrial paradise, and blessjlng. Enoch
and Elias, who remained there still aliye, he came
to his apostles, who were gathered together on
Mount Sion, which was the place F^pe be made
his last supper the night before his passion. There
were likewise with the apostles at this place, the
Messed Virgin, and many other disciples; and our
Lord appearing to :tliem said, that he would eat
with them before he departed from them, as a
special token and memorial of the love he tore them.
And as they were all eating, bej.^g full of joy and
spiritual comfort at this last refection of our Lord
Jesus, lie said to them&gt; " The time is now come in
which I must return again to him that sent me:
but you shall remain in the city till you are clothed
with tlie yirtue descending from above ; for within

a few days you shall be filled with the Holy Ghost,
as I before promised you. After which, you shall
be dispersed throughout the whole world, to preach
my gospel, baptizing all that shall believe in me, so
that you shall be my witnesses to the utmost confines of the earth." He likewise reproved them
for their incredulity in not believing them who had
seen him rise, that is the angels. This he chose to
do at the time ho was speaking to them of preaching his gospel, to give them to understand, that
they ought to have believed the angels, even before they saw him, much sooner than they ought to
be believed by those to whom they were to preach,
who, nevertheless, would believe them (the apostles)
though they should not see him, (Jesus Christ.)
And this he did, that by knowing their fault they
might remain humble; shewing them at his departure how much he admired that virtue, and that
he recommended it to them in a singular manner.
They asked him concerning many things that wero
to come to pass ; but he would not resolve them, inasmuch as it was not necessary for them to know
the secrets of God, which his father had reserved
in his own power, to fulfill at his o^n will and
pleasure. And thus they continued discoursing and
eating together, with great comfort and satisfaction,
occasioned by the presence of their Lord; yet their
comfort was mixed with some grief, by reason of his
departure from them. For they loved him so tenderly, that they could not hear him speak of leaving
them without heaviness and sorrow.
And what can we think of his blessed Mother ?
May we not devoutly imagine that, sitting near
him, and hearing what he said concerning his departure, she was moved with the tenderness of her
motherly affection ; and that overcome with grief.

soul, she inclined her head towards him, and rested it upon his sacred breast! For, if John the
Evangelist at the last supper, took this freedom,
with much more reason may we suppose her to do
the same on this doleful occasion. Hence, then,
with tears, and many sighs, she spoke to him in
this manner: " Oh my beloved son, I beseech thee
not to leave me ; but if thou must depart, and return again to thy heavenly Father, take me, thv
afflicted Mother, along with thee !" But our blessed
Lord endeavoured to comfort her, and said, " Grieve
not, oh beloved parent, at my leaving you because
I go to my Father; and it is expedient that you remain here a short time longer, to confirm in their
faith, such as shall be converted, and believe in me,
and afterwards I will come again, and take you with
me, to be a partaker of my glory." To whom again,
our Lady replied, " My beloved Son, may thy will
always be fulfilled in all things, for I am not only
contented to remain here during thy pleasure, but
also, to suffer death for love of those souls, for which
thou hast so willingly vouchsafed to lay down thy
life: this, however, I beseech thee, be thou ever
mindful of me." Our Lord then again comforted
her, with the disciples, and Mary Magdalene, saying, " Let not your hearts be troubled, nor fear ye
any thing, I will not leave you desolate ; I go, but
will shortly return again to you, and will remain
always with you." At length he bid them remove
from thence, and go to Mount Olivet, because from
that place he would ascend into heaven, in the
presence of them all: saying this, he disappeared.
His holy Mother, with the rest of the company,
without any delay, hastened to the said mount, about
a mile distant from Jerusalem, as he had appointed

Our Lord Jesus ascended visibly for the greater

received him out of their sight, and in an instant they
were present in heaven! And as the blessed Virgin
and the disciples were looking still up to heaven,
two angels stood beside them in white garments,
who began to comfort them, telling them not to
look loager after his body, which they saw ascend
so gloriously into heaven, for that they should not
see him any more in that form till the day of
Judgment, when he should come to judge the quick
and the dead. They bid them return into the city
again, and their to expect the coming of the Holy
Ghost, as he himself had told them. His blessed
Mother spoke to the angels, desiring them to recommend her to her blessed son ; who profoundly
