A tragic love song about the romance between a highland chieftain, Sir James the Rose, and the fair Matilda, the daughter of the Lord Buchan. When Matilda’s father discovers her love for Sir James, he does not approve of the match and instead bids that she wed Sir John the Graeme. When she goes to tell her lover, they vow to wed anyway, which is overheard by Donald, Graeme’s brother, who then attacks James. In defending himself, James kills Donald. When he tries to flee to Skye to rouse the clan Rose, Matilda bids him to wait and sleep in the park instead where she can watch over him and sends a page instead to find his kin. The page is captured by the Graeme on his way where he discloses the plan and location of Sir James. Graeme attacks James with twenty men but James defends himself valiantly, slaying several of the knights as well as the Graeme himself, although he himself is mortally wounded in the process. As James dies, Matilda commits suicide by throwing herself on James’ sword as well.

Abstract
Inspired by Chaucer’s Wife of Bath, this tale describes the Wife’s journey after death. As the Wife travels first to hell and then to heaven, she is rejected by the Devil – who does not wish to be harried by her scornful tongue – and then a long number of biblical characters in heaven due to her many earthly transgressions. The Wife’s flyting appalls and shames all of these characters until she ultimately comes before Christ who at first rejects her as well, but then ultimately accepts her when she submits faithfully to him.

Abstract
A sermon on Genesis ii. 18: And the Lord God said, it is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him a help-meet for him. The preacher breaks up the passage into smaller phrases and deals with them individually, extolling the many virtues of marriage and its rightness in the eyes of God. The proper roles and behaviors for both husband and wife are discussed at length, as well as the dangers of improper behavior, such as adultery. The sermon also includes some invectives against the Roman Catholic Church and their policy on clerical marriage. The sermon is followed by a short passage entitled, “Lady Fretful: A Sketch from Real Life,” which describes a pessimistic woman who complains and sees the worst in everything.
