THE TURKISH

LADY.

Y

OuNg virgins all I pray draw near,
A pretty story you shall hear,
It's of a Turkish Lady brave,
Who fell in love with an English slave.

A merchant ship in Bristo' lay,
As we were sailing o'er the s e a ,
By a Turkish Rover took were we,
And all of us made slaves to be.
They bound us down in irons strong,
They whipp'd and slash'd us all along,
No tongue can tell, I'm certain sure,
What we poor sailors do endure;
Comesiryoydown and listen a while,

And hearhowFortunedidonhimsmile,

fortune for to be,
A slave unto a rich lady.

She drest herself in rich array,
And went to see her slaves one d a y ;
Hearing the moan this young man made,
She went to him, and thus she said,
From what country young man are you ?
I'm an Englishman, Madam, that's true.
I wish you wassomeTurk,saidshe,

I'deaseyou of your slavery.

I'd ease you of your dlav'ry work,
If you'll consent to turn a Turk,
And me myself to be your wife,
For I do love you as my life.
No,
no,
no, no, no, said he,
Yourconstantslave,dearMa'am,I'llbe,
I'llsoonerbeburntatthestake,
Before thatI'llmyGodforsake.
This Lady to her chamber went,
And spent the night in discontent;
Little Cupid with his piercing dart,
Did deeply wound this Lady's heart;
She was resolved the next day,
T oeasehimofhisslavery.
And own herself to be his wife,
For she did love him as her life.
She dress'd herself in rich array,
With this young man she sail'd away,
Until they came toBristolshore,
With jewels, diamonds, and gold great
Houses
And all her slaves are close confin'd:
Unto her parents she bid adieu
By this you see what love can do.

And married unto her own slave,
That was in chains and bondage too,
By this you see what love can do.

My M O T H E R did so before M E .
I
am a brisk young lively lass,
a little more thin twenty ;
And, by my comely air and dress,
I can have sweet-hearts plenty;
But I'll beware of wedlock's snare,
though dying swains adore m e ;
T h e men I'll teaze, myself to please,
my mother did so before me.
In rich brocades, and diamonds bright,
like gayest springs delighting,
My parts and humour shall unite
to make me more inviting.
F o r I'll advance, and learn to dance,
to please shall be my glory ;
I'll learn to trace each step with grace,
my mother did so before me.
I'lldressas fine as fine can be,
my pride shall be my pleasure ;
And though my neighbours envy me,
to mind them I've no
leisure
I'll take delight, both day and night,
to
be talk'd of instory;
I'll have it said, There shines a maid
!
my mother did so before me,
T o park and play I'll often go,
to spend each leisure hour;
I'll walk and talk with ev'ry beau,
and make them feel my power.

(

)
But if a dart should pierce my heart,
from one that does adore me,
We'll wed and kiss, What harm's in this?
my mother did so before me.
Then will I manage, when I wed,
my husband to perfection ;
For as good wives have often said,
"
No snaring fool shall o'er me rule,
or e'er eclipse my glory;
I'll let him see I'll mistress be,
my mother did so before me.

CYNTHIA'S PERPLEXITY.
CYnthia frowns whene'er I woo her,
Yet she's vex'd if I give over,
Much she fears I should undo her,
But much more to love her lover
;
Thus in doubting she refuses,
And not winning thus she loses.

Age and wrinkles will o'er take you;
Then too late, desire will find you,
When the power must forsake you.

                <text>A collection of ballads and songs on a variety of topics. The first is a standard tale of tragedy of two lovers of unequal classes, with an interesting twist at the end. The daughter of a Lord falls in love with her father’s groom; they marry in secret and are betrayed by the lady’s maid to her father. The father throws the young man into prison and then has his daughter watch as he is executed, which apparently drives her mad – she is thrown into “bedlam” (4). The second song celebrates the victory of General Howe over the French in the Glorious First of June, while the next ballad is the lament over a lover lost at sea off the coast of Iceland. The last is a love song, dwelling particularly on the beauties of nature as a setting for lover, presenting an idyllic portrayal of the countryside and rural life.</text>

                <text>A collection of ballads or poems. The first is a litany of the many sins that plague Britain at this time, including pride, drunkenness, prostitution, dishonoring one’s parents, and forsaking the Sabbath. The second is a humorous verse that encourages men to be deaf in one ear to avoid strife and the distress of scolding, especially from one’s wife. In the next piece, a young man uses smooth words to convince a resisting young woman that he loves her, even though he is of a higher class than her, before breaking her trust and leaving her – it is implied that he takes her virginity as well as her heart before disappearing. The next is a short song about the courting between a young man and woman, and a discussion of her tocher. The following two pieces are written as an address and a reply between a young woman and man, the first who writes of the unfaithfulness of her love, while he responds with a reaffirmation of his love and faithfulness. The last is a song about the courting of a young woman by a young man, with an emphasis on the types of behavior men engage in when they “do romance.”</text>

When all but one of his friends abandon him, he decides that none of the upper-class ladies are worth his affection so he goes off in disguise as a peasant to his own lands. There he discovers a poor state of affairs with a corrupt steward and a wrongly-imprisoned pastor, and he endeavors to anonymously right the wrongs of his tenants. In the process of paying off the pastor’s debts, the disguised Lord falls in love with the pastor’s daughter, who he rescues from the unwanted attention of a steward and whose affection he claims. In the end, he casts off his disguise to the joy of all and marries the pastor’s daughter.</text>

The first is a short song about a young woman comparing the two men who are courting her, one old and rich and the other poor and young, which alludes to the common theme of the sexual insatiability of virgins. The second song urges shepherds to abandon their flocks and let ambition drive them to great success in life. The next is a lament on the death of the singer’s love, focusing on a description of her tomb. A popular song focusing on wool and the production of it follows, providing a portrait of a shepherd’s working life, emphasizing the superiority of rural life over living as a king. The following song focuses on the pain of love and the despair that inevitably follows rejection, while the last song is the pitiful lament of the Queen of France upon her imprisonment and the death of her husband</text>

                <text>A rather shocking cautionary ballad meant to encourage young women to guard their virginity and not be coaxed by men into pre-marital relations. In the tale, a merchant’s daughter is courted by a squire’s son at Oxford. A marriage date is agreed upon by her family, but she allows herself to be talked into sleeping with him before they marry, after which he abandons her and disappears to London for two years. After he leaves her, she decides to go become a wandering shepherdess. Years later, her betrothed returns to Oxford where he is confronted by her parents, but he blames it on her own falsity. When he hears about a beautiful shepherdess in the country, he tracks down this beauty and, not recognizing her at first as his jilted lover, attempts to convince her to sleep with him. When he recognizes her and she refuses him, he comes back the next day and rapes and kills her and throws her body in a river. As a moral tragedy, her death is punishment for her original transgression, while her lover is tormented by the thought of what he has done, which drives him to his own deathbed, where he confesses to her father, which causes his death as well.</text>
