A collection of several songs and ballads, including: a song in broad Scots expounding upon the joys of drinking; a reminiscence on the pleasures and beauty of home to one exiled; a lament for the fallen warriors following the defeat of Wallace; a young woman mourns the death of her lover, fallen in battle; two lovers meet amongst the trees, leaves, and birds of a glen; a scheduled tryst gone awry when the two lovers get their meeting place mixed up, only to be rescheduled for the next day; a soldier’s march to battle and call to arms; and a Jacobite song describing the welcome arrival of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the mustering of the Highlanders.

A summary of the resource.
A collection of several songs and ballads. The first song humorously depicts the ridiculousness of country courting, while in the second song Queen Mary bewails her fate in prison on the eve of her execution. In two more songs on the theme of love and courtship, a young woman is courted by her suitor and argues with her mother, while a shepherd is rejected by the one he loves, regardless of all the assistance he gives her with her own farm work. This song includes several good depictions of the types of field work and domestic tasks of rural life. In the final song, a sailor sails home to his love who waits for him faithfully.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A collection of songs and ballads. The first song wishes speed to a fishing vessel, as well as describing some simple celebrations of love and home life, while the second song describes the beauty and allure of the young lass who has stolen the singer’s heart. In the following song, a young woman is promised to a young lord, and although her marriage would bring her much wealth, she weeps because her heart loves another. On the day of the wedding, the young bride is found to have run away with her love. The final song is a popular ballad in which an old wife harangues her husband to get up and out to work while he complains about the state of his old cloak as well as the sharpness of her tongue.

A summary of the resource.
A collection of songs and ballads. In the first, when a young soldier in the king’s guard must leave to fight for his king, his sweetheart begs to accompany him in disguise as a fellow soldier, causing strife between the two as he is sent abroad to fight. In the second, the beauty of a young woman is praised by comparing her features to various features of Nature. The third song is a lament of a young woman whose love has marched off to war, leaving her behind to compare the desolation of winter of the surrounding valley to the desolation of her heart. In the last song, a bird sings a lament for Prince Charlie, who after his defeat is forced to run and live rough in a land that should be his by rights.
