Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A Cinderella-type story wherein the daughter of a squire is cast off at birth by her father for being born a girl and not a son. Her mother sends her to the country but makes certain she is well-clothed and educated. As a young woman, she dresses herself in a garment made of cat skins and wanders the countryside until she is hired as a scullion maid for Knight’s house. When the Knight’s son goes to attend a series of balls, she begs to be allowed to follow him, but is beaten by her mistress. Ignoring the ban, the girl dresses herself again in her rich clothes and attends the balls several nights running, during which time the son dances with her and begs her to tell him who she is. When he eventually follows her back to his own home, he discovers who she is, and, exposing her lineage to his parents, obtains their permission to marry her. The tale ends with a happy reunion between daughter and father.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A rather shocking cautionary ballad meant to encourage young women to guard their virginity and not be coaxed by men into pre-marital relations. In the tale, a merchant’s daughter is courted by a squire’s son at Oxford. A marriage date is agreed upon by her family, but she allows herself to be talked into sleeping with him before they marry, after which he abandons her and disappears to London for two years. After he leaves her, she decides to go become a wandering shepherdess. Years later, her betrothed returns to Oxford where he is confronted by her parents, but he blames it on her own falsity. When he hears about a beautiful shepherdess in the country, he tracks down this beauty and, not recognizing her at first as his jilted lover, attempts to convince her to sleep with him. When he recognizes her and she refuses him, he comes back the next day and rapes and kills her and throws her body in a river. As a moral tragedy, her death is punishment for her original transgression, while her lover is tormented by the thought of what he has done, which drives him to his own deathbed, where he confesses to her father, which causes his death as well.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Set during the wars of independence in South America, this story describes the adventures of a company of British seamen and their Scottish captain who became privateers and occasional pirates along the Chilean and Peruvian coast. In an act of desperation, these sixteen men audaciously attack and capture the Spanish Minerva from 250 Spanish defenders, to the benefit of the government of Valparaiso and themselves. An additional short story tells the tale of the author’s toothache and the advice he receives from many individuals in how to care for it, ending with an easy recipe and cure for the malady. Two short humorous anecdotes follow, one describing the conversation between an Englishman and a Highlander and their various miscommunications, and one about a native’s “fiery nose” and the observations of young African servant.

A song describing the battle between the Earl of Douglas and Lord Percy that took place when Douglas decided to raid across the border into Northumberland. It appears to be a modernization of a much earlier ballad. Both sides appear to fight gallantly, but the Scots take the day by slaying Englishman and taking Percy captive; however, Douglas is slain in the course of the battle. The second song is somewhat of a ghost story, wherein the Lady Anne meets with three children in the woods, and upon wishing one of them was her own, discovers that one indeed had been before he was murdered by his nurse.
