<text>Four tales are included in this chapbook, followed by a single humorous song about a rather intimidating school master. The first story is a tragic love story set during the ’45 rebellion. James Dawson, a young Lowlander who joins the cause of Bonnie Prince Charlie, is captured during a battle. He is imprisoned and held in London until the end of the war, whereupon he is sentenced to die for aiding the Young Pretender. His betrothed, Fanny, is with him throughout his imprisonment and sentencing, and ultimately dies of a broken heart at the very moment of his execution. The second tale is a short, humorous story of a married couple who agree to join the tee-totallers after observing that drinking was ruining their lives. In celebration of their success, they decide to buy a bottle and bring it home for “guests”, and end up drinking it on the way home, with predictably amusing consequences. The next story is a folktale about a poor couple who are unexpectedly given three wishes, which they use most unwisely. The final story describes the American Revolution and the events at one particular English encampment where a series of sentinels disappear without a trace; eventually these disappearances are discovered to be the work of Native Americans disguised as pigs.</text>

<text>A collection of short ballads and songs on a variety of topics. The first is a short song describing the playful exchange between a little man and a little woman, and how he convinces her to marry him. The second is a humorous account of a marital quarrel, overheard by a young bachelor, in which the wife accuses her husband of being a lazy, whoring layabout who never gives her enough money to feed the children, while he accuses her of cuckolding him with the tailor while he was away at sea. The dispute escalates into a full out brawl by the end of the song, with both bewailing the fact that they ever had been married, which serves to justify the wishes of the eavesdropping bachelor to avoid such a state himself. The next song compares each decade in a man’s life, from conception to death, with the progressive months of the year, followed by a song describing and praising the beauty and charms of the girl loved by the author. The final song cheerfully depicts a young woman who is fond of laughing and is courted by a young man to whom she is inclined to accept. However, she amuses herself by imagining herself laughing in church when she must pledge to “Obey” her husband. (8)</text>

<text>This chapbook includes two tales based on historical characters followed by a short anecdotal tale. The first story describes the life of Jane Shore, from childhood in a merchant family, to marriage to a goldsmith, to life as mistress to Edward IV and others, to her fall and punishment during the reign of Richard III. The tale is followed by the supposed words of lamentation, bewailing her adulterous career. The second story tells the tale of a Scottish soldier who was billeted in a French home following the victory at Waterloo, during which time he became beloved by all the family, especially the youngest daughter. After he is recalled to England, the young French woman decides to follow him after a period of two years, whereupon they are reunited in Glasgow. The final story is a short anecdotal story in which a young man is accused of theft after he is seen leaving the robbed house in the middle of the night, due to the fact that he was actually sneaking out after spending the evening illicitly with the daughter of the house. Judicial proceedings, torture, false confession, and a sentence of execution follow, only to be narrowly avoided in the end by the apprehension of the true burglars.</text>

<text>Part of a series of folk and fairy tales printed by the booksellers. A folk tale from London, this story details the rise of Richard Whittington, a historical figure, from friendless orphan to successful businessman, mayor, and knight in London during the reign of Edward III. After making his way to London as a boy, Whittington is taken in by a silk merchant and his family as a servant boy. Whittington saves his money to buy a cat who becomes his best friend and ultimately the secret of his success when, in a serendipitous sequence of events, the cat and her kittens are traded as mousers to a king and queen in Africa in exchange for a vast amount of wealth. The noble and generous spirit of Whittington allows him to capitalize on this wealth and ultimately achieve every desire of wealth, influence, and happiness.</text>

However, the real Whittington did not come from a poor family of common stock, and there is no compelling evidence supporting the stories about the cat, or even whether he owned one.</text>

<text>Part of a series of fairy tales printed by the booksellers. The first tale included tells the tale of the Yellow Dwarf, a fairy tale with many fantastical elements including fairies, dwarves, griffins, sphinxes, mermaids, and nymphs. The story leaps about quite a bit before ending with the tragic deaths of two of the main characters. This story is followed by the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood, set in the town of Roseville in the south of France. Included in this tale are a few bits of rhymes that are used to enhance the moral cautions of the tale, including the recommendation to always tell the truth and not conceal any wrongdoings from parents. The last tale included in this collection is, “The Magic Bottle,” in which a poor Irishman, Mick Purcell, trades his last cow to a tiny person for a magic bottle that makes him rich. When Mick trades his bottle to his landlord in exchange for ownership of his farm, he loses his luck and all of his riches until he trades his last cow once again for a second bottle, out of which issue two men that beat him. Mick uses this bottle to then obtain his original bottle from his landlord, whereupon he lives out the rest of his prudently.</text>
