Like furies our brave Highlandmen,
Most boldly they engaged them,
On field they durst no londer s t a n d ,
They soon began to flee.
They rusht into the battle,
Made sword and targe to rattle,
Which made their foes to startle,
They fell dead on the ground.
Our army gave a loud huzza,
Our Highland lads have won the day,
On field they durst no longer stay,
See how the cowards run.
This battle was no sooner over,
Than ten thousand of the other,
Came marching in good order,
Most boldly for to fight.
Their colours were displaying,
Their horse foaming and braying,
Their generals are faying.
We'll soon put them to flight.
But our bowmen gave a volley,
Made them repent their folly,
They soon turn'd melancholy,
And stagger'd to and fro.
Our spearmen then engaged,
Their rage they soon asswaged,
Like lions our Heroes raged,
Dealt death at every blow.
For one hour and a quarter,
There was a bloody slaughter,

Thousands lay reeking in their gore,
T h e like was never done before,
The fields did swim with blood.
T h e English could no longer stay,

In every want we find a friend,

<text>This chapbook includes two ballads. The first is a recounting of the events of the Battle of the Boyn wherein King William routes the deposed James II at the Boyn in Ireland during the First Jacobite Rising. There is an interesting play on the nationalist tone of piece that seems to support the Protestant monarchy while still providing a somewhat sympathetic view of James. The second ballad is a ribald song about a miller who “sets his stones to work” on first the daughter, then the wife of an old man, who are both pretty pleased with their ‘encounters’. When the old man goes to revenge himself on the miller, the miller instead beats the old man and sends him back home to his womenfolk.</text>

The title song is a romantic ballad on the love a young man has for his lover, his desire to lavish attention, money, and love upon her, rejecting the will of his parents in order to one day soon marry her. The second song is a humorous song detailing the wonder of an Irish soldier at the various experiences and military kits he receives after he enlists. The next song is a humorous but cautionary tale about a drunkard who spends all his money on drink and is consequently rejected by his well-dressed mistress, which leads him to decide to stop drinking and go home to his poor wife and children who he had likewise abused during his drinking days. The next two songs are paired to detail the desirable qualities to be had in a husband and wife, with an emphasis on virtues of economy, frugality, intelligence, honour, discretion, and good conversation. The final song describes a young country couple who are so in love that when the Lord of the village attempted to seduce the young lass to his bed with offers of money, jewels, and silks, she rejected all his offers saying she would prefer to walk, be poor, and wear linsey-wool rather than leave her love.</text>

<text>A collection of songs and ballads on a variety of themes and topics. The first song is lament of an Irish lass whose lover has gone off to war in France, while the second describes the efforts young women go to in order to attract the handsome young rakes of the town, including descriptions of fashion, food, and balls and other activities for young people. The next song is a very detailed description of some of the sights, smells, activities, and people you might experience at the Rag-Fair on Rosemary lane, including clothiers, hawkers, meat vendors, whores, pick pockets, and much more. Following this is a song in the form of a dialogue between a mother and her randy daughter who can think of nothing but young men and losing her maidenhead, to which the mother responds with bribes to cool her heels and suggests whistling instead. The next song is noted as having been written and sung by a Mr. Dibdin and details the many exploits of an Irish rogue as he does his best to cheat the public and avoid work. The final song is a short ditty praising wine as a good motivator and captain for a soldier.</text>
