The first song, in which Neptune bears witness to the Battle of Quiberon Bay during the Seven Year’s War, celebrates the victory of Admiral Hawke and the glory of the British monarchy. The second is a humorous song following the familiar theme of the marriage of an old man and a young virgin, and her various objections and preferences for a young man. The next song, also humorous, tells the woes of a shiftless man who keeps trying to borrow money. The last two songs are the entreaty of a young man to win his love, and the maid’s reply and rejection due to her belief that his love will not last.</text>

The first is a litany of the many sins that plague Britain at this time, including pride, drunkenness, prostitution, dishonoring one’s parents, and forsaking the Sabbath. The second is a humorous verse that encourages men to be deaf in one ear to avoid strife and the distress of scolding, especially from one’s wife. In the next piece, a young man uses smooth words to convince a resisting young woman that he loves her, even though he is of a higher class than her, before breaking her trust and leaving her – it is implied that he takes her virginity as well as her heart before disappearing. The next is a short song about the courting between a young man and woman, and a discussion of her tocher. The following two pieces are written as an address and a reply between a young woman and man, the first who writes of the unfaithfulness of her love, while he responds with a reaffirmation of his love and faithfulness. The last is a song about the courting of a young woman by a young man, with an emphasis on the types of behavior men engage in when they “do romance.”</text>

                <text>A collection of ballads and songs on a variety of topics. The first is a standard tale of tragedy of two lovers of unequal classes, with an interesting twist at the end. The daughter of a Lord falls in love with her father’s groom; they marry in secret and are betrayed by the lady’s maid to her father. The father throws the young man into prison and then has his daughter watch as he is executed, which apparently drives her mad – she is thrown into “bedlam” (4). The second song celebrates the victory of General Howe over the French in the Glorious First of June, while the next ballad is the lament over a lover lost at sea off the coast of Iceland. The last is a love song, dwelling particularly on the beauties of nature as a setting for lover, presenting an idyllic portrayal of the countryside and rural life.</text>

THE L O N D O N L O R D TRICKED.

C

O M E all you country girls so fair,
and
London lasses too;
A merry ditty I have to tell,
and certainly 'tis true.
In
Ryegate liv'd a buxom lass,
bothbeautifuland fair,
And beauty was her portion,
as after you shall hear.

Her father was a farmer, and
near Ryegate he did dwells
Hard by him liv'd a noble Lord,
whose

His country house in Ryegate was,
with sweet and pleasant air,
And this young Lord he fell in love,
with the farmer's daughter fair.
He often times beheld her there
a milking in the morn,
While he must go to drink the milk,

Says he, I haveslightedLadies,
of honour, birth, and fame;
But Cupid has betray'd me to
an honest country dame.
I must reveal my passion,
or for her lose my life;
i f money her virtue will o'ercome,
I soon will end the strife.
Next morning he went unto her,
as she a milking were,
And thus begins the story with
the farmer's daughter fair»
O
thou fairest of all creatures,
my heart's in love with thee,
If thou canst love a London Lord,
a
Lady thou shalt be.
What do you mean ? the girl replies
more fit I am I vow,
To mind my father's dairy, Sir,
and feed the pigs and sow.
I
cannotdressup in the mode,
as London Ladies wear.
Says he, I'll keep a chamber-maid,
to wait on thee, my dear.
A chamber-maid! the girl replies,
Ican'tbutlaugh at that,
Must I to court in my short cloak,
my feather in my hat!

4

No, no, my dear, that is the dress,
my jewel, thou shalt wear,
When you along with me do ride,
to take the country air.
But still reply'd the country girl,
I've something more to say,
Amongst the Ladies I can't dance,
except it were the hay.
But thou canst dance in bed my dear,
and that's theprettiestsport:
O
never fear, I'll warrant, Sir,
as well's the best at court.
It was downright country courtship,
which made the Lord to sinile,
But his whole intention was,
this maiden to beguile.
But country girls are not such fools,
as to be taken in,
And
you shall hear this country bite,
which she did put on him.
He made her many a present
of jewels, watch, and rings,
This girl was very well pleased,
with
all these pretty things.
The cow-house It was their chamber,
in which they us'd to court;
At length he must be fooling, Sir,
under her petticoat.

5

Says she, Is this the way, kind Sir,
you courtiers go to woo ?
Says he, My dear, there is no harm,
we use the Ladies so.
I do not like your fashions, Sir,
the country girl reply'd;
And I'll not be a Lady Sir,
till I am made a bride.
She found he had great store of gold,
she says, I plainly see,
That he's got no intention,
to make a bride of me
He shall not have my maidenhead,
I solemnly do swear,
But I'll bite him of a portion,
and marry Ralph my dear.
Next morning he went unto her,
as he was wont to do,
With a pretence to drink warm milk,
as it came from the cow :
And with this charming young milk-maid,
still
fooling he would
Said he, My dear, five hundred pounds,
i'll give to lie with thee,
Then afterwards I'll marry yon,
andthenthere'llbe no harm :
Sir, If I lose my maidenhead,
it shall be in the barn.

be;

For the money youshallpay down,
and treat me well with wine;
This night twelve o'clock, kind Sir,
'tis then I'll fix the time.
M y Lord was very well pleased,
to hear her in the mind
And into the barn he did convey
some bottles of good wine,
A gang of Gypsies us'd to ly,
within the barn all night ;
Mark how this fair maid she did lay,
a crafty cunning bite.
She told unto the two Gypsies,
how she the scheme would lay.
And bid them to conceal themselves
among the straw and hay.
Says she, I will give you notice,
in every degree.
I f you can bite this amorous blade,
rewarded you shall be.
At twelve o'clock to her he came,
as
it appointed were ;
They had no light but what the moon,
she could afford them there.
They sat them down among the
his arms round her he twin'd ;
So merrily they toss'd about,
the bottles of red wine.

The girl she often kiss'd the cup,
but seldom touched the wine ;
At length his Lordship's eyes began
to twinkle very fine :
He laid him down among the straw,
and fastasleepdid fall:
The farmer's daughter,shearose,
and did theGypsiescall.
She said, Go strip all to your buff,
and down by him go ly,
The little Gypsie on his back,
I beg that you will tie
His hands I'd hate you tie them fast,
'tis easy to be done;
And when he wakes all in a fright,
like a mad man he will run;
Five pounds she to the Gypsies gave,
and homeward she did steer
And then my Lord began to wake,
in the morning fair and clear:
He made a roll upon his back,
the young Gypsie 'gan to squeak,
His hands being ty'd, he then began
to scramble on his feet.
The naked Gypsies all stood up,
their coal-black hair hang down :
He took them for some de'ils in buff,
he like a mad man run.

The young onesquakingathisback,
his wig all tagg'dwithstraw
l ike a mad-man he did run home,
such a fight ye never few.
The servants they were all amaz'd,
when they did let him i n ;
They took the Gypsie off his back,
andsoonrelieved him.
The child he's like to keep; Sir,
for the Gypsies theyaregone;
Now
become the talk of all
the Ladies of the town
But still he was well pleased with
the prank that she had play'd,
Says he, I am fully resolv'd
to wed this virtuous maid.
For virtue is her portion,
of it she's got her share :
And now my Lord has married
the farmer's daughter fair.
SHE'S W H A T I D A R E NOT N A M E .
IF
love the virgin's heart invade,
How, like a moth, the simple maid
Still plays about the flame!
If soon she be not made a wife.
Her honour's sing'd, and then for life
She's what I dare not name.

                <text>This is a single humorous song about a young lord who tries to trick a farmer’s daughter into sleeping with him by offering to wed her. She in turn tricks him by demanding money and wine first, and only pretending to drink while the lord drinks until he passes out. When he wakes up he finds himself lying with Gypsies instead of the young woman, and a Gypsy child tied to his back, whereupon he runs naked with the child back home where he is let in by his servants. Surprisingly, this trickery convinces him to truly marry the farmer’s daughter after seeing the lengths to which she would go to protect her maidenhead. The song is followed by a short anecdote, also on the importance of female chastity.</text>

The second song describes the pleasures of country life and exhorts young women to stay in their villages rather than seeking employment in cities. The third describes the various pleasures and festivities of a fair, while the next song if the lament of a young woman whose lover has been inconstant. The next is a drinking song, while the last also tells the mourning of a young woman forsaken by her lover. Interestingly, one verse praises the female cuckoo as a “fine bird.” (8)</text>

THE TURKISH

LADY.

Y

OuNg virgins all I pray draw near,
A pretty story you shall hear,
It's of a Turkish Lady brave,
Who fell in love with an English slave.

A merchant ship in Bristo' lay,
As we were sailing o'er the s e a ,
By a Turkish Rover took were we,
And all of us made slaves to be.
They bound us down in irons strong,
They whipp'd and slash'd us all along,
No tongue can tell, I'm certain sure,
What we poor sailors do endure;
Comesiryoydown and listen a while,

And hearhowFortunedidonhimsmile,

fortune for to be,
A slave unto a rich lady.

She drest herself in rich array,
And went to see her slaves one d a y ;
Hearing the moan this young man made,
She went to him, and thus she said,
From what country young man are you ?
I'm an Englishman, Madam, that's true.
I wish you wassomeTurk,saidshe,

I'deaseyou of your slavery.

I'd ease you of your dlav'ry work,
If you'll consent to turn a Turk,
And me myself to be your wife,
For I do love you as my life.
No,
no,
no, no, no, said he,
Yourconstantslave,dearMa'am,I'llbe,
I'llsoonerbeburntatthestake,
Before thatI'llmyGodforsake.
This Lady to her chamber went,
And spent the night in discontent;
Little Cupid with his piercing dart,
Did deeply wound this Lady's heart;
She was resolved the next day,
T oeasehimofhisslavery.
And own herself to be his wife,
For she did love him as her life.
She dress'd herself in rich array,
With this young man she sail'd away,
Until they came toBristolshore,
With jewels, diamonds, and gold great
Houses
And all her slaves are close confin'd:
Unto her parents she bid adieu
By this you see what love can do.

And married unto her own slave,
That was in chains and bondage too,
By this you see what love can do.

My M O T H E R did so before M E .
I
am a brisk young lively lass,
a little more thin twenty ;
And, by my comely air and dress,
I can have sweet-hearts plenty;
But I'll beware of wedlock's snare,
though dying swains adore m e ;
T h e men I'll teaze, myself to please,
my mother did so before me.
In rich brocades, and diamonds bright,
like gayest springs delighting,
My parts and humour shall unite
to make me more inviting.
F o r I'll advance, and learn to dance,
to please shall be my glory ;
I'll learn to trace each step with grace,
my mother did so before me.
I'lldressas fine as fine can be,
my pride shall be my pleasure ;
And though my neighbours envy me,
to mind them I've no
leisure
I'll take delight, both day and night,
to
be talk'd of instory;
I'll have it said, There shines a maid
!
my mother did so before me,
T o park and play I'll often go,
to spend each leisure hour;
I'll walk and talk with ev'ry beau,
and make them feel my power.

(

)
But if a dart should pierce my heart,
from one that does adore me,
We'll wed and kiss, What harm's in this?
my mother did so before me.
Then will I manage, when I wed,
my husband to perfection ;
For as good wives have often said,
"
No snaring fool shall o'er me rule,
or e'er eclipse my glory;
I'll let him see I'll mistress be,
my mother did so before me.

CYnthia frowns whene'er I woo her,
Yet she's vex'd if I give over,
Much she fears I should undo her,
But much more to love her lover

The first tells the tale of a Turkish woman who falls in love with her English slave and consequently becomes Christian and runs away with him to England. The second is a playful song of a young woman who claims she will do as her mother did and flirt and avoid marriage for as long as she can, and to thereafter rule her husband as well. The next song tells of the courting of Jockey and Jenny as he proposes and they run off to the fair, followed by a drinking song praising the life of beggar women as considerably more free from toil and stricture compared to the lives of aristocratic Ladies. The last song criticizes a young woman who will not make up her mind about whether to accept the courtship of a young man, urging her to make a decision before her beauty fades.</text>

                <text>A collection of ballads and songs on a variety of topics. The first is a humorous song about three girls who, while bathing naked in the pond while their father is asleep, are surprised into flight by a young man falling into the pond from his hidden perch in the trees. The father runs outside as his naked daughters run in and he mistakes them for enemy soldiers coming to plunder his house, at which point he calls his neighbours to come aid him before the whole episode is revealed by the original peeping tom. Other songs include: a lament by a young woman who is betrayed by her false lover; a satirical song that matches up particular classes and occupations with different tavern signs, based on stereotypes; and three songs about sailors and sailing who are alternately separated or reunited with their lovers.</text>
