<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A collection of ballads on a variety of topics. The first song, in which Neptune bears witness to the Battle of Quiberon Bay during the Seven Year’s War, celebrates the victory of Admiral Hawke and the glory of the British monarchy. The second is a humorous song following the familiar theme of the marriage of an old man and a young virgin, and her various objections and preferences for a young man. The next song, also humorous, tells the woes of a shiftless man who keeps trying to borrow money. The last two songs are the entreaty of a young man to win his love, and the maid’s reply and rejection due to her belief that his love will not last.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A collection of ballads or poems. The first is a litany of the many sins that plague Britain at this time, including pride, drunkenness, prostitution, dishonoring one’s parents, and forsaking the Sabbath. The second is a humorous verse that encourages men to be deaf in one ear to avoid strife and the distress of scolding, especially from one’s wife. In the next piece, a young man uses smooth words to convince a resisting young woman that he loves her, even though he is of a higher class than her, before breaking her trust and leaving her – it is implied that he takes her virginity as well as her heart before disappearing. The next is a short song about the courting between a young man and woman, and a discussion of her tocher. The following two pieces are written as an address and a reply between a young woman and man, the first who writes of the unfaithfulness of her love, while he responds with a reaffirmation of his love and faithfulness. The last is a song about the courting of a young woman by a young man, with an emphasis on the types of behavior men engage in when they “do romance.”]]></dcterms:abstract>

The first is a standard tale of tragedy of two lovers of unequal classes, with an interesting twist at the end. The daughter of a Lord falls in love with her father’s groom; they marry in secret and are betrayed by the lady’s maid to her father. The father throws the young man into prison and then has his daughter watch as he is executed, which apparently drives her mad – she is thrown into “bedlam” (4). The second song celebrates the victory of General Howe over the French in the Glorious First of June, while the next ballad is the lament over a lover lost at sea off the coast of Iceland. The last is a love song, dwelling particularly on the beauties of nature as a setting for lover, presenting an idyllic portrayal of the countryside and rural life.]]></dcterms:abstract>

She in turn tricks him by demanding money and wine first, and only pretending to drink while the lord drinks until he passes out. When he wakes up he finds himself lying with Gypsies instead of the young woman, and a Gypsy child tied to his back, whereupon he runs naked with the child back home where he is let in by his servants. Surprisingly, this trickery convinces him to truly marry the farmer’s daughter after seeing the lengths to which she would go to protect her maidenhead.
